RICK AND LORRY PUT THIER DECADES OF EXPERIENCE IN ENTERTAINMENT, DESIGN, and COMMERCE INTO EACH AND EVERY SMILEY FACE MEDIA PROJECT.
Through all of the tides, we have keyed into what makes a production truly exceptional. It starts with an understanding that it is not enough to just tell someone that you are a storyteller. Living colorful lives full of variety and unbound exploration has allowed us to to drop into character and commit to the role, every time.
The night after our summer solstice wedding, two tornadoes ripped through the old-growth forest I grew up in and directly over the spot where we said “I do.” Trees wider than your wingspan were uprooted and twisted like rope, while our arch stood. We were living in Los Angeles at the time and had flown back to Indiana to have a small, Midsummer’s dream ceremony and reception where Rick’s Western life, our LA lives, and my Indiana life would come together.
While a certain level of intensity seams to surround us, so does an intense sense of calm and the ability to operate efficiently and effectively under pressure. Necessity breeds innovation. Had the pandemic not uprooted our with early shut-downs and stay-at-home orders, returning to the Indiana countryside would have remained that homesick fantasy. Upon realizing the probability of events and timelines to follow, we packed a car and drove to Indiana in March of 2020 with our bare essentials and fur babies. The move become permanent later that summer, when we fully realized that could both operate remotely and live a lifestyle that suited us.
In order to maximize the potential of a two-person team, we embraced technology and systemized our responsibilities. Leaning into this leanness we discovered smooth operations devoid of the heaviness which often accompanies production. Simple adjustments, like using a drone instead of a crane, and using our wood shop to build custom sets and devices, have allowed us to streamline the entire process. While we rarely need a massive team, having long embraced the ebbs or artistic kinship, we are blessed with friends and colleagues locally, all over the United States, and all over the world who know how to deliver when a project exceeds our two-person base.
